On a former horticultural site, a derelict packing shed is reimagined as a low-energy family home. The original timber and steel frame remains intact, now skinned with coppiced sweet chestnut and glass. Over time, the cladding will weather gently and settle the house into its landscape.
The design begins with a simple gesture, a south-facing courtyard that leaves the existing volume in place. Within it, a two-storey timber box defines entrance, kitchen, utility and play. This crafted insertion, lined in Douglas fir, acts as furniture rather than form. It allows the shed to breathe and the scale to remain.

Public spaces sit quietly within the big covered room. Light enters from the east, air moves through the narrow plan, and passive solar principles guide the rhythm of the day. Shading in summer, warmth in winter, and cross ventilation throughout.
The project begins with what was already there, allowing the site to guide its transformation.
