Le Portelet

Coordinates 49° 43’N 2° 66’W

Altitude 16.45 m

Set into the wooded escarpment above Portelet Harbour, Le Portelet replaces a dilapidated 1950s brick bungalow with a contemporary Cross-laminated timber coastal home. A place to slow down and connect with the elements. A place to listen to the changing light, the scent of salt air, and the rising and falling tide lapping the beachhead. Conceived as three timber volumes embedded in the hillside, the design offers framed views and connections from every principal room while maintaining privacy from the semi-public road behind.

Drawing from the language of local fishermen’s storage boxes, the sweet chestnut cladding mediates between land, sea and sky. The building sits lightly on its site, with piled foundations and a superstructure of cross-laminated timber panels, chosen for their precision and sustainable credentials. The house lightens toward its edges, like the leaves of a tree.
