Etoile Du Nord
Coordinates 49° 43’N 2° 66’W
Altitude 29.53m
Set just below the escarpment ridge, facing west above the marias, Etoile du Nord reimagines a modest 1960s bungalow into a layered coastal home. The greenest gesture, working with what already stands, guided the transformation. Built over a German bunker and adapting a poorly constructed post war dwelling, the project embraces the slope, the sea view and the complexities beneath.

A split-level plan carves into the hillside, balancing privacy from the road with openness to the coastal horizon. But is the section that defines the experience: tracking sun, wind, horizon and offering a layered response to place, memory, and climate. South-facing light scopes draw sunlight deep into the kitchen and living spaces, while the narrow plan invites the sea breeze to cool the interiors. Double-height glazing and a rooftop pavilion frame morning and evening light.
Locally crafted walls in reconstituted ‘vardex’ stone, tinted during casting, anchor the building to place. Lightweight upper volumes hover above, quietly confident against the sky. Highly insulated and precisely detailed, the house stands as a contemporary home attuned to Guernsey’s landscape: grounded, and resilient.
